Why don’t they check tickets at Korean train stations?

There is something that foreigners are surprised when they ride the trains in our country.

It is that they don’t check the tickets. It is just surprising to foreigners who are used to the culture of pickpocketing and rip-offs.

Currently, no matter which train station you go to in Korea, you don’t check your ticket when you board the train. On the contrary,

overseas, they always check the ticket gate and the ticket, but in Korea, not only the ticket gate, but even when you board the train, you don’t check your ticket.

In fact, our country wasn’t like this from the beginning. In the early 1980s, we used these small paper tickets.

When you go to the platform to board a train, the station staff will punch a hole for you to enter. However, at that time, computerization was not yet properly implemented,

so it was difficult to designate seats. They even had to manage the inventory of tickets at each station.

However, after our country opened the KTX in 2004, a big change occurred, which was the opening of the ticket gates.

However, there were some problems with these ticket gates, such as the fact that they were easily broken and that carriers got caught in the ticket gates, which was very inconvenient.

Then, starting in 2006, PDAs were distributed to train crews, making it possible to immediately catch fraudulent passengers, and as of 2009,

ticket checking at train stations was completely abolished. Even now, PDAs can be used to immediately find and punish fraudulent passengers,

so if you just get on the train just to see if you get caught, you may be in for a misfortune. ㅎㅎ
